Both Ashtanga and Hatha yoga are practiced at The Yoga Retreat. Ashtanga yoga is a physically demanding style of asanas (poses) due to the constant flow of movement from one asana to the next, known as Vinyasa. Pranayama (breathing) guides this style of yoga. In Astanga yoga, there is a Primary Series and an Advanced Series. During my week at The Yoga Retreat, we learnt about half of the Primary Series, building on the series of asanas day by day. Hatha is a more restorative style of yoga meant to balance the body ('ha' in Indian Sanskirt translates to sun and 'tha' translates to moon). Hatha yoga taps into the body's energy chakras to balance positive and negative energy.
After a week at the retreat, I left feeling inspired, rejuvenated and motivated. My body and mind felt more whole and overall, I was stronger emotionally, physically, psychologically, economically, socially, environmentally…. Everything-ally. I’m just rambling on now.
While Koh Phangan has unofficially been renamed to "The Full Moon Party Island", this gorgeous island has so much more to offer than one night on the beach with 40,000 partiers between the ages of 18-21. Venture out beyond the obvious; explore, be vulnerable and fearless. You'll get a whole lot more out of it.
